Saints End Lyman’s Season Again

The St. Bernard Baseball team ended Lyman’s season in familiar fashion on Wednesday, with a 4-1 win at Lyman in the second round of CIAC Class S state tournament.  Its the second time in the last three years that the Saints have beat Lyman at Lyman in the second round to end the Bulldogs season.   St. Bernard Sophomore starter Willie Rios dominated from start to finish on Wednesday, limiting the Bulldogs to a couple soft singles while striking out a dozen or so batters.  The Saints struck first after Petey Aldrich ripped a leadoff double in the 2nd inning, moved to third on a fly ball, and scored on a sac fly by Sean Hurley.  They added a run in the 3rd on a ground out, and made it 3-0 in the 4th on an Avery Barlow single to left field.  In the 6th, they made it 4-0 when pinch runner Anthony Malchiodi pinch ran for Aldrich and promptly stole second and third base, scoring when the throw from the catcher got past the 3rd baseman.  Lyman did manage an unearned run in the 6th on a pair of St. Bernard errors, but wasn’t able to get any closer.  The Saints won not only the game but the season series between these two very strong ball clubs.   Lyman starter Christian Gonnelli threw very well in defeat for the Bulldogs.   St. Bernard advances to play 2nd seeded Derby away on Saturday in the quarterfinals in what should be a very competitive contest.
