My boy JR lights ’em up back home…

This is the story of John Rainey, who played for me for two years on the St. Bernard baseball

team, as well as played quarterback and point guard on our basketball teams.  John transferred to

Ledyard over the summer and has enjoyed great success so far this year.  He led the Colonels

to the State Championship game in football, and has been the starting point guard on the most

successful Ledyard boys basketball team in a long, long time.  In the ECC quarterfinals last night

held at St. Bernard, Rainey put on a show hitting 5 three pointers in leading his team to

a win and advancing to the semifinals where they will meet Waterford.  After he hit his first 3 you could

see him motion towards many of his former SB teammates who were sitting in the first row to cheer him

on.

Those of us who know Rainey know that he is a very competitive kid, but doesn’t take himself

too serious off the court or field.  This was a special night for John, to come back to SB and put on

a show and have his team win.  As a guy who has coached him in high school, summer ball, and had a

chance to get to know him since his middle school days, I couldn’t be happier or prouder of the kid I call J.R.
