Monday’s Highlights

Some of Monday’s newsworthy events included New London

Boys Basketball dismantling of Hyde of New Haven.  It is pretty

well known what a great basketball player NL’s Kris Dunn is but

he is also a fine young man.  He is well-liked by his peers, and I

don’t think I’ve met an adult who ever didn’t walk away from a

conversation with Kris thinking that this kid is special.  With Keith

Porter back in the lineup and playing great along with the rest of NL’s

team they will be a handful for anybody in the state tournament.  It would

be great to see an NL-Hillhouse or NL-St. Joe’s matchup in the tournament, I think the results will be different this time.

Waterford and Old Lyme played an exciting game last night, with Waterford and Nolan Long outlasting the Wildcats 64-52.  Long had 27 points, 15 rebounds and GearyMcleod had 16 for the Lancers.   The ECC Medium Division is as good as it has been in recent years, with Stonington and Waterford legitimate threats to give New London a game in the upcoming ECC Tournament.

Coach Risley led his Windham Whippets to big win last night over Griswold, keeping the Whips undefeated in the ECC Small.  The ECC is so incredibly strong in wrestling, you have to believe in some respects the ECC Tournament is tougher to win than some of the class meets for some teams.  Bacon, Waterford, Ledyard, Windham, Griswold, Killingly, Montville, NFA come to mind when I think oof schools that have had great success recently on the mats.

St. Bernard-NFA-Bacon Saints H0ckey had a great win last night over East Haven, 3-1.  East Haven is Division 1 in hockey, the Saints are division 3.  For you non-hockey people, this is kind of like a Class S school beating a LL school, and East Haven was the fourth ranked team in D 1 coming into the game with an 11-2-2 record.  Great win by Coach Discordia and the Saints hockey program.

NBA news was that the Lakers lost again on the road, but Kobe passed Shaq on the all-time scoring list.  I don’t think anybody cares about all-time scoring records in the NBA, or not nearly as much as they do about baseball records.  The Lakers have 0.0 chance to win the nba title this year as their team in constructed right now.  I love Kobe and the way he competes, but he just doesn’t have enough firepower with him right now.  More on that later.

Tom Coughlin said he wants to come back and coach the Giants again.  If the Giants are smart they just put a contract in front of Coughlin and have him fill it out.  Like his style or not, he has 2 super bowls in 4 years so that has to earn him the right to retire now on his terms from Big Blue.
